Never was a big fan of the original SMB Bowser sprites... but those are from a different time. Here's my take on the now.
Fire is obviously ripped, but everything else is all my own work.

Since the Bowser sprite is only displayed against a black background in SMB1, you could technically add another color by using the transparent value. This looks great though.

Yeah, I'm just particular and wanted it to look good on any background color. So all green.

This looks great. Not only because of how well drawn and readable they are for the scale, but also due to how I can picture this working in a NES game.

It took a lot of effort to get him readable but was well worth it. I've wanted to try actually replacing the ones in SMB with this.

Are these usable with the original SMB game (minus the hammers)?

Looks like it. Four colors (3 + transparency) fits within NES palette limitations on sprites, and the original SMB Bowser has four animation frames, so either one of the "lines" could be used as sprite replacements in the game. You could even use the hammers, but they would most likely replace the Hammer Bros hammers as well.

And of course, if you're good enough at reprogramming the ROM (usually requires knowledge of assembly coding) you can do almost anything.
